Behind Skiing uses Open-Meteo for weather data, which requires an active internet connection. Check your Wi-Fi or cellular signal. If you are in airplane mode or have no signal on the mountain, the app will show the last cached data. Pull down to refresh once you regain connectivity.
Avalanche forecasts are published by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) daily, usually by 7 AM Mountain Time. If the forecast has not been published yet for today, the app will display the most recent available forecast. During early morning hours you may see the previous day's data.
Location access is used only to show nearby ski services such as rentals, repair shops, and medical facilities in the Shops tab. Your location is processed entirely on your device and is never sent to our servers. You can deny location access and the app will default to Vail Village coordinates for nearby searches.
Run statuses in Behind Skiing are automatically derived from the current avalanche danger level and weather conditions, not from official Vail Resorts systems. Always check resort signage and the official Vail app for authoritative run status. Behind Skiing is a safety reference tool, not an official resort service.
Behind Skiing requires an internet connection to fetch live weather and avalanche data. It does not cache full offline data sets. We recommend checking conditions before heading out, as cell coverage on parts of Vail Mountain can be limited.
Yes, Behind Skiing is completely free. There are no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, and no ads. All features are available immediately with no sign-up required.
Weather data from Open-Meteo updates approximately every 15 minutes. Avalanche forecasts from CAIC are updated once daily, typically before 7 AM Mountain Time. The app fetches fresh data each time you open it or manually pull to refresh.
